Beginning My Homestead Garden

Homestead Garden Dream

Quick disclaimer, I am by no means a credible homesteader for I am only just beginning my garden. I simply wish to share what I have learned so far and how things are working out for me. Another disclaimer: some people wouldn’t consider what I am doing as homesteading because as I have learned through my research there is a controversy as to the definition of homesteading. So, for the time being I shall refer to this as a project; and now that all that is clarified I want to speak about what my goals are for this project.

My dream is to do my homesteading on an Earthship, mainly because I want to be more self-sufficient and less wasteful. Between building an Earthship or homesteading, the second seemed the easiest to follow. My logic is if I grow my own food (or a majority of it) I won’t have to buy plastic wrapped food with multiple preservatives shipped from who knows where and how. Having said this, I realize growing foods in the middle of my desert will be a challenge, but I will do my best to maintain the integrity of the natural ecosystem while finding hardy foods to grow. If it becomes too much work, then the second-best option would be to support my local growers and farmers.

Walkable Cities and other Ideas for Greener Cities

Hello guys today’s blog will be much less formal in comparison to my other posts. It will be more of an opinion piece so I’ll have the freedom of writing about what I think are community wide actions that can lead to greener cities, decreased pollution and a sense of a closer community. I will discuss Back to Parchment, walkable cities, and how focusing on locally owned business are positive influences for the environment and community.

Easy DIY Dog and Cat Zero Waste Tips

I’m a proud pet parent, always have been and as I was playing with my dog I wondered if there was a way for my pets to be part of my eco-friendly lifestyle? Half of me believes that there probably isn’t much to improve on because their actions are not destructive to the Earth the way our actions are. It was challenging because pets are not consumers, rather we consume and buy things for them. They like us have basic needs: food, water, shelter and good health; everything else is optional and can be considered a luxury. So, this is the mindset that I used to approach the question of whether pets can be zero waste. So how can we make these luxuries eco-friendly, I’ll address a few things regarding food, health, and a miscellaneous category.

Easy Peasy Composting: Black Gold

Benefits to Composting

There are multiple advantages to start your own compost, having said that I will be the first to admit that I am not very good at keeping up with it. Since we are renting and move somewhat frequently it has been hard to keep at it. It just seems like something interrupts my plans, sometimes we move before my compost is ready for use, other times, my plants die before I even get to use my compost and the process has just left me a little discouraged, I’m not going to lie. Regardless, I remind myself to keep trying because it is overall better for the environment. Composting significantly reduces the amount of yard waste and diverts it back to the soil instead of it taking up space in a landfill. It also helps improve the quality of soil, e.g. it allows clay like soil to have room to breath and it helps retain water in soil that is sandy.

Ten ways to be zero-waste on a plane trip
